Budget saxophone and accessory set: from 40,000 to 100,000 RUB

In this article I suggest saxophones and accessories I consider the most comfortable for starting lessons. If you already study with a teacher, talk through every purchase with them first.

How to use this guide

To simplify the choice, we assembled ready-made kits for soprano, alto, and tenor. Each type has its own accessories. If you have not decided on the instrument yet, read our detailed article or discuss the question with your teacher.

The selection lists models we recommend to students most often. Check stock and prices in stores: they depend on exchange rates, supply, and region.

Curved soprano saxophone

This saxophone suits children ages 6 to roughly 10–11. It is light and comfortable for small fingers, so students can build a proper hand position without excess tension.

Mouthpiece

  • Vandoren SL3 — the most comfortable option, about 12,000 RUB. Buy on aliexpress.ru.
  • Vandoren SL4 — a brighter SL3 alternative, about 12,000 RUB. Buy on aliexpress.ru.

Ligature and cap

  • Vandoren mouthpieces pair well with soprano ligatures by Vandoren, Rico, BG, or Roy Benson. They cost about 5,000 RUB and are available on saxbird.ru.
  • Stock ligatures that come with Vibra and Mercury horns do not fit Vandoren mouthpieces.
  • If you own a Roy Benson SG-302, the included ligature should fit Vandoren mouthpieces.

Mouthpiece patch

Vandoren, BG, or Yamaha patches up to 0.4 mm thick cost about 300 RUB each. Buy on saxbird.ru or aliexpress.ru.

Neck strap

Always try the strap on before buying to make sure it matches the player’s height.

  • The stock neck strap or Neotech, BG, and Bird straps — about 3,000 RUB. Buy on saxbird.ru.
  • Saxholder — a metal support that relieves the neck. It costs about 5,000 RUB and is available on saxbird.ru.

Reed

  • Vandoren Traditional (blue box) strength 1–2.5 — about 500 RUB per reed. Buy on saxbird.ru.
  • Vandoren Java (green or red box) strength 1.5–2.5 — about 500 RUB per reed. Buy on saxbird.ru.

Swab for the bore

  • BG France A 30 L — about 2,000 RUB. Buy on saxbird.ru or aliexpress.ru.
  • PlaySax swab for the crook and mouthpiece of a tenor sax — about 500 RUB. Buy on Ozon.

Music stand

Reinforced Brahner stands — about 2,000 RUB. Buy on aliexpress.ru.

Alto saxophone

This saxophone suits adults and children over 11. It is convenient for setting up the embouchure and learning academic playing.
